The French programme began in 1978 to replace worn-out Hotchkiss M201 jeeps. The brief was a vehicle that would take either a single machine gun for reconnaissance or MILAN missiles for anti-tank work, and protect its crew from small arms and NBC hazards.
The engine is the Peugeot XD3T turbo-diesel of 95 hp, later the DW10FC of 130. France took 1,380, Greece 242, Oman 124, Nigeria 72 and Botswana 64, with more across Africa. Renault Trucks Defense announced the purchase of Panhard General Defense in July 2012 and it took effect on 25 October that year.
