The engine is an air-cooled Volkswagen industrial flat four of about 40 hp — 36 in the early machines, 54 in the late ones — through a VW Bus transmission with a proprietary variator that does the steering. The cab is 1.88 m wide and seats seven.
Production stopped in 1981 when Volkswagen ended European production of that engine and there was nothing left to put in it. Snow Tracs served NATO forces and the Royal Marines through the Cold War, Antarctic research organisations including ANARE, and utilities across North America; several are in museums with Antarctic exhibits.
