William Besserdich and Bernhard Mosling had built the first FWD trucks at Clintonville and left to found the Wisconsin Duplex Auto Company in 1917 with a patented differential between the axles; the prototype of 1917, Old Betsy, still runs at Oshkosh’s headquarters, and the Model A of 1918 was the first production truck.

The company built road-maintenance and snow-removal trucks for counties and states through the 1920s and 1930s, the trade that kept it alive until the military contracts of the 1970s.
