The Piranha was drawn as a modular family — one hull in four, six, eight and ten-wheeled forms — which is exactly what made it licensable. The first prototype was the IB 6×6 of 1972.
Licence production followed in Canada, the United Kingdom, Chile and the United States, and the derivatives long since outnumbered the Swiss-built vehicles: the Canadian LAV and Bison, the Australian ASLAV, the American Stryker. The Piranha V of 25–30 tonnes is what European armies are buying now — 309 for Denmark, 227 or more for Romania, 348 or more ordered by Spain.
