Humber FWD Heavy Utility

Car, Heavy Utility, 4×4 (FWD), Humber — the Box — on a 2,838 mm wheelbase, 1941–45, and the only four-wheel-drive passenger car Britain built during the war. About 6,500 vehicles were made across the FWD series, which also covered 8-cwt trucks, ambulances and armoured cars.

The Box was what a senior officer used when a staff saloon would not reach. Its slab-sided estate body had room for maps, a wireless and four or five men, and the four-wheel drive took it across ground the rest of the staff fleet could not.

The same chassis carried 8-cwt trucks and ambulances. Together they make up a series of about 6,500 vehicles built at Coventry by Humber Limited of the Rootes Group.
