SAMIL in service

The South African Army began the Border War with Bedfords, Mercedes-Benz gun tractors and Magirus-Deutz ten-tonners and ended it on SAMILs, many of them with mine-protected cabs.

From 1978 the SAMIL 20, 50 and 100 replaced the Army's imported trucks, and by the end of the war in 1989 the SAMIL 50 and SAMIL 100 had displaced the Bedford three-tonners and the gun tractors entirely. Convoys ran hundreds of kilometres through mined country in South West Africa and Angola, which is why so many carried the armoured Kwêvoël cab.

The chassis also became fighting vehicles: the Air Force's Bulldog and Rhino patrolled its bases, the Ystervark shot down MiG-23s over Angola in 1987 and 1988, and after the war the Bosvark and the Bateleur rocket launcher went onto the Kwêvoël 100. At its peak the fleet numbered about 12,000 trucks, and it was still in wide use across the SANDF in 2011.
