A self-propelled anti-aircraft gun: a single 20 mm GAI-C01 cannon on a weapons deck in place of the Bulldog's troop compartment, on the mine-protected SAMIL 20 with its Deutz F6L 913 of 124 hp. About 70 were built from 1984.
The anti-aircraft regiments had towed their 20 mm guns until the SADF moved to mobile warfare in the early 1980s. The Ystervark, Afrikaans for porcupine, kept the armoured driver's cab at the front right and the mine-deflecting V under the hull. Four were tried operationally on Exercise Thunder Chariot in 1984; the first combat use was with 32 Battalion in 1986, and Ystervarks went with the mechanised battalions on Operations Modular, Hooper and Excite in Angola. One shot down a MiG-23 bombing the 61 Mechanised Battalion Group laager on 8 October 1987, and another a MiG-23 over Cuito Cuanavale on 17 March 1988. The Ystervark was phased out in 1991, replaced by the Bosvark on the SAMIL 100, and withdrawn in 1997. A Nongqai account places the SADF's 20 mm gun on a Buffel instead; Tank Encyclopedia and Wikipedia give the SAMIL 20.
