A fully enclosed, mine-protected personnel carrier built by Armscor on unmodified SAMIL 20 Mk I running gear for South African Air Force base defence: a V-shaped monocoque hull, 5.7 m long, 7,700 kg gross, a driver, co-driver and seven or nine men, and the air-cooled Deutz F6L 913 of 93 kW.
The Air Force put its requirement to Armscor in 1983. According to Nongqai, 30 Rhinos had been built, 20 for the SAAF and the rest for other government departments, and the vehicle was offered to the Army as an interim replacement for the Buffel: it could be built from stock SAMIL 20 chassis in about seven months for 100 vehicles, at a capital cost for which only 39 Casspirs could have been bought. Its hull was rated to withstand a triple mine. The Army chose the Mamba instead. A Rhino is displayed at Air Force Base Swartkop.
