The G5 entered service in 1981 and was used aggressively in Angola. Towed behind the SAMIL 100 it formed a long train that was hard to take through dense bush, and bush-breaking damaged both tractor and gun until modifications followed; the difficulty was one reason for the self-propelled G6. The gun tractor was still in South African Army service in 2017.
