The SADF's armoured ambulance of the Border War: an armoured monocoque hull built around mainly SAMIL 50 running gear, with room for four stretchers, a guard and four or five seated patients or staff.
Medical orderlies in the operational area needed an ambulance that could survive a mine; the Rinkhals, named like the SADF's other armoured ambulances after a snake, gave the protection of a Casspir with more room. The hull resists 7.62 mm ball from beyond 30 m and 7.5 kg of Torpex under any wheel or the hull. The Rinkhals was replaced by the Mfezi at the end of the war. Its production dates and numbers are not published.
