SAMIL trucks carried the South African Defence Force through the Border War in South West Africa and Angola — supply convoys under Kwêvoël mine-protected cabs, the G5 gun tractors, the Ystervark anti-aircraft guns — and the SANDF after it. Surplus SAMILs now work on mines, farms, building sites and game reserves.

The South African Army began the Border War with Bedfords, Mercedes-Benz gun tractors and Magirus-Deutz ten-tonners and ended it on SAMILs, many of them with mine-protected cabs.
Reconditioned ex-military SAMILs work for mining groups, exploration companies, contractors, farmers, forestry and tourism, and an estimated 5,000 still run in southern and central Africa.
