The Carden-Loyd Mark VI gave the British Army its first tracked machine-gun and mortar carriers and gave half a dozen other armies the pattern for their tankettes. Its successors, the carriers of the late 1930s, went to France with the British Expeditionary Force: ten Bren carriers in every infantry battalion and 44 Scout carriers in each mechanised cavalry regiment.
The Universal Carrier then served with British and Commonwealth armies from the Western Desert to north-west Europe, carrying infantry support weapons, towing anti-tank guns and, as the Wasp, a flamethrower. The Soviet Union received 200 in 1941 and 2,560 Universal and Loyd carriers after; Australia sent 1,500 to China. After the war carriers went to Argentina, West Germany, Israel, Pakistan and others, and Ireland's were still in use in the 1960s.
