The Unimog went to war before it went to the fields of many countries: the French Army’s 1953 requirement produced the 404 S, the Bundeswehr took it from its founding in 1956, and 64,242 were built for those and the Swiss, Belgian, Dutch, Argentine and Indonesian forces; the U 1300 L of 1976 (about 20,000 for the Bundeswehr) and the U 4000/U 5000 UHN since 2002 continued the role, with the Bundeswehr, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia and the UN.
The G-Class began as the Bundeswehr’s and the Shah’s requirement of 1972; the Bundeswehr chose the Iltis first and took the G as the Wolf from 1990 (about 12,000, with the armoured SSA and the mine-protected Enok), while the Swiss Army bought about 4,000 Puch G, France 13,500 licence-built Peugeot P4s, Norway the Multi, Canada 1,159 G-Wagens in 2003 and Australia 2,146 G-Wagons including a Graz-built 6x6 in 2012–15. The Wolf served in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Mali, the P4 in Chad, the Gulf and Afghanistan, the Canadian G-Wagen in Kandahar.
