France chose the G over the Land Rover and the Volkswagen Iltis in 1980 and had Peugeot build it with French engines and 70 per cent French content; the P4 served in Chad, the Gulf, the Balkans and Afghanistan and was refurbished by Panhard from 2010 as the P4 Panhard until the Ford Ranger-based VT4 replaced it.
