Mercedes redesigned the G for 2018 for the first time in 39 years, keeping the look and the locks but adding independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and a modern cabin; the 2024 facelift brought the G 580 electric with a motor at each wheel and the mild-hybrid G 450 d and G 500. The military versions (the Bundeswehr’s Wolf successor, the Swiss and Canadian orders) moved to it after the W461 ended in 2022. The 500,000th G, an agave-green 2023 car, marked the total since 1979.
