Ford’s first military four-wheel drives were Marmon-Herrington conversions: from about 1936 the Indianapolis firm fitted Ford ½-ton trucks with a driven front axle for the US Army, the Belgian Army and other governments, and built the T9 half-track on the same basis. In the war Ford built the Willys-designed Jeep as the GPW (about 277,000) and its own amphibious GPA (12,778) — both recorded under Jeep in this registry — while Ford of Canada and Ford in Britain built the four-wheel-drive Ford and Fordson trucks of the Commonwealth armies.
The Army chose Ford’s design for the Jeep’s successor in 1951 and the M151 MUTT of 1959 served through Vietnam, the Cold War and the Gulf War, built by Ford, Kaiser Jeep and AM General for more than 100 countries; the Humvee replaced it from 1985. Since then Ford’s military four-wheel drives have been commercial: F-Series and Ranger pick-ups and Expeditions with the US forces, the Israeli and Philippine M151A2s into the 2000s, and the Ranger T6 with the Australian and other armies.
