UMM was founded to supply four-wheel drives to farms, industry and public services, and Portuguese fire brigades used Alter IIs as fire tenders and ambulances. In France, where a quarter of UMM’s sales went, fire services and utilities bought them for their strength and Peugeot mechanicals, and UMM France supplied customers in the overseas territories.
A specially adapted long-wheelbase Alter carried Pope John Paul II at Funchal on 12 May 1991. Most of the Alter 2000s built in 2000 went to tourist safari firms, many in the Algarve. The French Cournils in public service are under Cournil.
