Military UAZs

The Ulyanovsk plant was set up in 1941 to build trucks for the front and from 1954 built the GAZ-69, the Soviet Army’s light four-wheel drive; its own 450 cab-over of 1958 gave the army an ambulance and van on the same chassis and the 452 of 1965 kept that role for sixty years. The UAZ-469 of 1971 with hub-reduction axles was the Soviet Army’s and the Warsaw Pact’s standard light vehicle through Afghanistan and the Cold War and was supplied to more than 80 countries.

The 3151 series served the Russian and CIS forces through the Chechen wars and the Hunter, Bukhanka 3962 ambulance and Patriot serve them now; the Russian Army ordered 1,500 Patriots in 2023, and Belarus, Serbia and Nicaragua run them. Licence assembly for allied armies ran in Ukraine, Cuba, Vietnam, Azerbaijan and Sudan.
