International Harvester sold to the people who bought its tractors and heavy trucks, and its four-wheel drives went to work: the Travelall and the 4x4 pick-ups to farms, county road crews, utilities, the Forest Service and the ambulance and hearse trade, the Scout to rural mail routes, ranches, snow-plough contractors (the Sno-Star package) and the Forest Service. Diesel Scouts of 1976–80 were bought for economy on farms and by the Alaskan fleets.

The Scout also raced: Scouts won their class in the Baja 1000 in the 1970s and the SSII Baja Cruiser was named for it; Monteverdi sold the rebodied Safari to Gulf and European buyers as a luxury vehicle. Surviving Scouts are collected and restored, and Scout Motors, a Volkswagen company, revived the name for an electric four-wheel drive announced for 2027.
