Military Steyr-Puch

Both vehicles were designed to army requirements: the Haflinger to the Bundesheer’s 1958 call for a mountain-infantry carrier, the Pinzgauer to Austrian and Swiss needs of the 1960s for a truck that could follow the infantry off the road. The Bundesheer and the Swiss Army took most of the 7,000 military Haflingers and the greater part of the first-generation Pinzgauers; Australia bought 46 Haflingers for the Pacific Islands Regiment and the Royal Navy a few for its air stations.

The British Army adopted the second-generation Pinzgauer in the 1990s as the 105 mm Light Gun tractor of the Royal Artillery and as ambulance and command vehicles for the Royal Marines, and kept buying the Guildford-built Pinzgauer II through Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan; the armoured Vector of 2007 was withdrawn within two years. Surplus Swiss and Austrian Pinzgauers supply the civilian market.
