As the SANDF released surplus trucks, remanufacturers at Rosslyn, Wallmansthal and Boksburg rebuilt them for civilian buyers. The same Magirus-Deutz designs had been sold new to civilians as the SAMAG, and the SAKOM served the Army's second line.

German sources estimate that about 5,000 SAMILs are still in use, in South Africa and in Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia and Tanzania. Retired military trucks have also been rebuilt as fire engines, building-site trucks and special vehicles.
