The Portuguese Army tested a Cournil in 1977 and ordered 245 by public tender in 1978, twenty of them carrying a 106 mm recoilless rifle; the GNR tested one the same year and bought a large number, and the Guarda Fiscal followed. The armed forces of the Netherlands, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Zaire also used UMMs.
The Army took its UMMs abroad for the first time with ONUMOZ in Mozambique in 1993, and in Bosnia from 1996 they drew enquiries from other European armies. In France the Army kept the Peugeot P4 but the Gendarmerie bought Heuliez-built Alters for its mountain and overseas units. The French Cournils of Gevarm and SIMI are under Cournil.
