The 504 was already the standard French car of west and central Africa; Dangel’s four-wheel-drive version added a driven front axle without losing the parts supply, and it went to the places where that mattered.
In France itself the Dangel conversions are public-service vehicles: most of the 5,500 505 breaks went to fleets, and the van conversions are what a French commune buys when the road above the village is snowed in.
