A field artillery tractor is a specialised thing: it has to carry the gun's crew and its ready ammunition, keep both dry, and go wherever the gun is needed. The Quad's enclosed body answered all three, which is why the shape is so unlike anything else on four driven wheels.
It towed the 25-pounder gun-howitzer and later the 17-pounder anti-tank gun, with 24 boxed rounds of 25-pounder ammunition and at least eight boxed anti-tank shells aboard. The CDSW had done the same job for the 18-pounder and the 4.5-inch howitzer before it, and modified CDSWs hauled the Bofors.
