Mobility Technology International held the United States military contract and subcontracted the build to Lamborghini. The design came from MTI and was largely FMC's XR311; FMC sued both when the Cheetah was shown at Geneva in 1977. Rodney Pharis, its designer, demonstrated it to the military, but it was never put through a trial.
Lamborghini filed for bankruptcy in 1978 and the Italian government ran the company until 1980. The prototype was sold to Teledyne Continental Motors and survives. The LM002 that eventually reached production in 1986 was a civilian car, though it found buyers in the Gulf.
