The Protze was designed around one job — towing the 3.7 cm Pak 36 and carrying its crew and ammunition — and then asked to do a dozen others. Its air-cooled boxer made it unusually tolerant of extremes of climate, and its 6×4 layout gave it a long, stable wheelbase without the cost of a driven third axle.
It was obsolete by the middle of the war, as was the gun it had been built to tow, but the photographic record is unusually good for a pre-war six-wheeler and the shape is unmistakable.
