Guy built its first military vehicle in 1923 and designed military types largely at its own expense through the lean years of the 1920s and 1930s. Its six-wheelers went to the War Office and the Indian government, and in 1936 its vehicles were tried in the extreme cold of Estonia.

In the Second World War Guy built 13,305 Army vehicles of all types. The Quad-Ant towed field guns from France in 1939 to North Africa; the Guy Armoured Car saw its only fighting in France in 1940; and the Lizard gave 7th Armoured Division an armoured headquarters in the desert.
