GKN Sankey in service

Sixty-three years of continuous service is unusual for any armoured vehicle. The FV432 went in in 1963, peaked at almost 2,500 vehicles in the 1980s, and was rebuilt rather than replaced: the Ministry of Defence signed an £85 million contract with BAE Systems Land Systems for over 1,000 Mk3 Bulldogs with Rafael reactive armour, a new engine, air conditioning and a remote 7.62 mm mount, the first 500 handed over in December 2006 for Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Saxon did the wheeled version of the same job from 1984 and came out in 2012, with 147 kept in storage; it is still in service in Ukraine, Malaysia, Nigeria, Oman, Somalia, Mozambique, Congo and Djibouti. Sankey also made the British Army's standard trailers.
