The Bundeswehr’s specification wanted a light vehicle that conscripts could maintain. The two-stroke triple and the eight-speed gearbox answered it more cheaply than Porsche’s 597 could, and the Munga got the contract.
The Dutch bought about 2,000 and released them onto the British market as surplus twenty years later. The Volkswagen Iltis, drawn by Audi from the Munga, replaced it in German service from 1978.
