Three Cournils started the first Paris–Dakar in 1979 — a long, a short and a prototype — and three again in 1980. A prototype and an open long-wheelbase car ran in 1982 and an open long car in 1983, alongside the Portuguese UMM team, whose three cars all finished in 1982.
Cournils were also used in 4×4 trials: a long Cournil competed at Jou-sous-Monjou in the Cantal on 15 August 1987, and Alain Cournil built an articulated trials prototype for Daniel Roche in 1983.
