Yugoslavia wanted a light four-wheel drive it could build itself, and bought the design twice: Willys from 1953, Fiat's Campagnola from 1955. The second licence stuck.

The AR-55 outlasted the state that ordered it. Vehicles built at Kragujevac in the 1960s were still in service with the successor armies through the wars of the 1990s, and with the police alongside them.
