The P4 with the French forces from 1981: 13,500 ordered for the Army, the Gendarmerie and the air force, assembled at Sochaux and then by Panhard, with the armoured P4P and the air-portable VPS for special forces, refurbished in the 2000s and replaced by the VT4 from 2018.

The P4 replaced the Hotchkiss M201 — the French-built wartime jeep — as the Army’s light vehicle, and its Mercedes chassis with Peugeot engines gave France a home-built G-Wagen. It served in Chad, the Gulf, the Balkans, Afghanistan and the Sahel.

Panhard’s refurbishment kept the fleet running into the 2010s; the Ford Everest-based VT4 has been replacing it since 2018 and surplus P4s are now sold to collectors.
