The Campagnola was designed to the Army’s autovettura da ricognizione requirement and the AR51 replaced the wartime Willys in the Esercito, Carabinieri, Polizia and Guardia di Finanza from 1951; the AR59 carried the type through the 1960s with the diesel and the ambulance body. Zastava’s licence of 1954 gave Yugoslavia its own Campagnolas until 1974.

The AR76 of 1976 was the Army’s light vehicle of the 1980s and 1990s alongside the Land Rover, retired in the 2000s for the Iveco VM 90 and the Defender; surplus AR59s and AR76s went to the civil protection and the collectors.
