Japan rebuilt its forces around licence-built American equipment, and the Mitsubishi Jeep was the light vehicle of that settlement: the Type 73 light truck served the JGSDF for decades in soft-top and hard-top forms with the 2.7 diesel.

Abroad, the L200 is Mitsubishi’s military and police vehicle by adoption rather than design — bought off the shelf by governments and aid agencies for the same reasons as the Hilux.
