Working Austins

The Gipsy at work: General Post Office telephone vehicles, fire-brigade light tenders and rescue units, farms and estates, and overseas assembly in New Zealand, Australia and Colombia; the civilian Champ WN3 went mostly to Australia.

Austin sold the Gipsy to the same customers Rover courted — the GPO, fire brigades, county councils, farmers — and won a share of them for ten years; the long 111-inch version carried the bodies those fleets needed.

The civilian Champ never found that market: about 500 were built and most were exported to Australia, where the Rolls-Royce engine and the price made it a curiosity rather than a working vehicle.
