History

Under the arms embargo South Africa built its military trucks at home. Truckmakers produced the two-ton SAMIL 20, the five-ton SAMIL 50 and the ten-ton SAMIL 100 6×6, strengthened versions of Magirus-Deutz designs with more local components in each Mk II, and supplied the chassis for the Kwêvoël mine-protected trucks and for weapon carriers such as the Bateleur rocket launcher. The SAMIL fleet peaked at about 12,000 trucks. Truck-Makers at Rosslyn is among the firms that now remanufacture surplus SAMILs for civilian buyers.
