History

Islington was one of the four Australian carrier builders, with the Victorian Railways' Newport Workshops, the Metropolitan Gas Company's Fitzroy works and Ford at Homebush. The carriers were of British design with imported Ford engines; Islington's 1,560 and the parts for 5,583 others made it one of the largest contributors to Australia's LP2 programme.
