History

The Newport workshops opened in 1882. In the Second World War they were turned over to military work, building Beaufort bomber rear fuselages and tails, and Victorian Railways built carriers there as one of the four makers — with South Australian Railways at Islington, the Metropolitan Gas Company at Fitzroy and Ford at Homebush — of Australia's LP carriers; about 4,800 were built in four states between 1941 and 1943. The site is now used by V/Line and railway preservation groups.
