The Deutz F6L 913 of the Mk I did not suit the heat and dust of South West Africa. The Mk II replaced it in production with the ADE 352N from Atlantis Diesel Engines, the company the government set up after the 1977 arms embargo and licensed in 1979 to build Mercedes-Benz and Perkins diesels. The start date of Mk II production is not published; Wikipedia places the SAMIL 20 in production in the mid-1980s.
