The Ulm truck and fire-engine maker founded by Conrad Dietrich Magirus, part of Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz and known for its air-cooled Deutz-engined trucks. South Africa built its 130 M 7 FAL, 192 D 12 AL and 320 D 22 AL under licence as the SAMIL 20, 50 and 100, and its civilian trucks as the SAMAG.

History

Magirus merged with Humboldt-Deutz in 1936, and its trucks carried the Magirus-Deutz name from then on. In 1975 Magirus became part of Iveco; KHD's partnership with Fiat ended in 1979, leaving Fiat with the brand, but Iveco trucks with air-cooled engines were sold as Magirus until the end of the 1980s. Magirus-Deutz exported widely and licensed its designs abroad — TAM in Yugoslavia from 1958, NASCO in Egypt from 1959, Otokar in Turkey from 1963 — and in South Africa its trucks were built as SAMIL for the military and SAMAG for civilian buyers, the third-generation bonneted models until 1998. The South African Army had used ten-ton Magirus-Deutz trucks as gun tractors and heavy logistic vehicles before the SAMIL 100 replaced them. Iveco sold the loss-making Magirus business to Mutares SE, completing the sale in January 2025.
