ACMAT, Saint-Nazaire

The Saint-Nazaire works of ACMAT (Ateliers de Construction Mécanique de l'Atlantique), successor to René Legueu's ALM of Meaux: maker of the VLRA from 1967, the ALTV and the Bastion, and since the Arquus merger the group's centre for rebuilding French Army trucks.

History

René Legueu, who had converted Latil, Mathis and Matford vehicles at Meaux since 1924, founded ALM (Ateliers Legueu Meaux) in 1948 to convert Panhard lorries to all-wheel drive; the TH4 followed in 1954, the TF4 in 1960 and the TPK range in 1961. When the end of the Algerian war took away the colonial buyers, his son Paul Legueu moved the firm to Saint-Nazaire in 1965 as ACMAT and launched the VLRA in 1967; the VLRA carried the company alone for some forty years. ACMAT quoted 93 per cent of its sales as exports to at least 48 countries. Renault Trucks Defense bought it on 16 May 2006 and added the Bastion (2008), the ALTV (2009) and the Trigger (2017); from 2018 the plant built the VT4 that replaced the French Army's P4s. The site employs about 400 people and maintains the Army's VLRA, TRM 2000, TRM 1000, PVP and GBC 180.
