The military-vehicle maker spun out of Kaiser Jeep’s General Products Division by American Motors in 1971: builder of the M151A2 MUTT to 1982, the M939 five-ton trucks of 1982–87, the HMMWV since 1984 (about 281,000), the civilian Hummer and H1 of 1992–2006 (11,818), the Hummer H2 for General Motors in 2002–09 and, since February 2023, Oshkosh’s JLTV A2 design under an $8.66 billion Army contract.

History

AM General inherited Kaiser Jeep’s military contracts at South Bend in 1971 and built the M151A2, the M718A1 ambulance and the 2½ and 5-ton trucks; it won the HMMWV contract on 22 March 1983 and has built the Humvee at Mishawaka since 1984, adding the civilian Hummer in 1992 and GM’s H2 in 2002. Sold by AMC in 1983, it passed through LTV, Renco and MacAndrews & Forbes to KPS Capital in 2020, and took the JLTV A2 rebuy from Oshkosh in 2023.
