The twin-engined 2CV: a second 425 cc flat-twin and gearbox in the boot drove the rear wheels, one gear lever worked both gearboxes, and either engine could be run alone. Type-approved as the AZ 4/4 on 11 October 1961, it was built from December 1960 to 1967, 694 in all.

The record
Maurice Bonafous, an aeronautical engineer, built a twin-engined 2CV of his own in 1955; Citroën showed prototypes from 1957–58 and to the French Army in 1959, aiming the car at oil exploration in the Algerian Sahara. It was assembled at the former Panhard works on the avenue d’Ivry in Paris, cost 9,820 francs against 4,750 for a 2CV AZLP, and had a fuel tank under each front seat, filled through the doors, and its spare wheel on the bonnet. Production ran 20 in 1960, 274 in 1961, 112 in 1962, 87 in 1963, 138 in 1964, 35 in 1965, 27 in 1966 and one in 1967. The Guardia Civil bought 80 and the Swiss Post used them for deliveries.
