The short-wheelbase 40 Series Land Cruiser, built in Japan from 1960 to 1984 on a 2,285 mm (90-inch) wheelbase: soft top or hard top, the 3.9-litre F six until 1975 and the 4.2-litre 2F after, with B, H and 2H diesels as the BJ40/42 and HJ45 from 1974. Toyota's best-known four-wheel drive and the model that established the marque in Australia, Africa and the Americas.

The record
The 40 Series replaced the 20 Series in 1960 with a new body, a three-speed (later four-speed) gearbox and a two-speed transfer case, on leaf springs front and rear with beam axles. The short FJ40 was the core of the range; the medium FJ43 (2,430 mm) and long FJ45 (2,650 and 2,950 mm) carried wagon, pick-up and cab-chassis bodies. The 2F engine of 4.2 litres arrived in 1975 and the B-series diesels from 1974 for markets outside North America. Production in Japan ended in 1984 when the 70 Series took over, but the Brazilian Bandeirante — a 40 Series body on Mercedes-Benz and later Toyota diesels — continued at São Bernardo until 2001. Toyota's cumulative Land Cruiser production passed 10 million in 2019; the 40 Series' share is not published separately.
