Toyota do Brasil was founded in 1958 and began assembling the FJ25 from kits at São Paulo, moving to São Bernardo do Campo in 1962 and fitting the locally built Mercedes-Benz diesel to meet local-content rules. The Bandeirante name — the colonial pathfinders — stayed with the Brazilian Land Cruiser until 2001.
