Mercedes relaunched the G as a luxury vehicle in September 1990 with the W463: permanent four-wheel drive, a centre differential and three locks, anti-lock brakes and a wood-and-leather interior, and kept the body through 28 years of engine changes and facelifts (2007, 2012, 2015). AMG versions from 1999 made it a performance car; the portal-axle 4x4² and the six-wheeled G 63 6x6 (built by Magna Steyr on the Australian Army’s 6x6 chassis) were its extremes. Production at Graz ended in 2018 for the second generation.
