Mercedes-Benz G-Class chassis numbers

Every G carries Mercedes-Benz’s chassis number: before the 17-character VIN a 14-digit number of the form 460.2xx 1x 000000 (model code, body/drive code, serial), and from the 1980s the VIN beginning WDB (Mercedes-Benz, Germany) or, for Graz-built cars in some markets, WDC, with the six-digit model code (460 231, 463 240 and so on) in positions 4–9; the Puch G carries Steyr-Daimler-Puch’s own prefix and the Peugeot P4 a Peugeot VIN. Where to find it

The data plate on the door pillar (right-hand B-pillar) and the number stamped on the right-hand chassis rail under the front door; the model plate under the bonnet on the W460.

How to read it

1979–1980s14-digit Mercedes chassis number
Model code (460 = W460, with a three-digit sub-code for the engine and wheelbase: 460.2xx short, 460.3xx long), a two-digit body/drive code, and a six-digit serial.
1980s–today17-character VIN
  • 1–3 world manufacturer identifier: WDB = Mercedes-Benz Germany (used on Graz-built G-Class), WDC = Mercedes-Benz (some markets), W1N = Mercedes-Benz AG (2019–)
  • 4–9 the model code: 460 (W460), 461 (W461), 463 (W463 and the 2018 generation), with the sub-code for engine and wheelbase (463 240 = G 500 long, 463 270 = G 63 AMG…)
