The Army’s Blazer: the M1009 Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle of 1983–87, a K5 Blazer with the 6.2-litre Detroit diesel, a 24-volt electrical system, a three-speed automatic, military lighting and a brush guard, bought as a cheap alternative to the M151 and the Humvee for stateside and support units.

The record

The CUCV programme put about 70,000 modified Chevrolet trucks into the Army, Air Force and Marines in 1983–87: the M1008 pick-up, M1009 Blazer, M1010 ambulance, M1028 shelter carrier and M1031 chassis cab. They served into the 2000s with the National Guard and were sold as surplus.
