The Prado name had been applied to a lighter 70 Series wagon (the 70 'Prado' of 1990–96); the 90 Series of 1996 gave it a separate chassis shared with the Hilux Surf/4Runner, with torsion-bar independent front suspension and a coil-sprung rear axle. Petrol fours and V6s and the 1KZ-TE turbodiesel were offered; the 120 Series followed in 2002.
