Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ)

The Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod) plant, built with Ford in 1932, that made the Soviet Union’s wartime four-wheel drives — Grachev’s GAZ-61, GAZ-64 and GAZ-67 — and the GAZ-69 of 1953 before handing it to Ulyanovsk, with the M-72 Pobeda 4x4 and the GAZ-46 amphibian; today the GAZ Group’s truck and van maker.

History

GAZ began in 1932 building Ford Model A and AA under licence and designed its own cars from the Emka of 1936; Vitaly Grachev’s GAZ-61 of 1938 was the first Soviet four-wheel-drive car and his GAZ-64 of 1941 the Soviet Jeep, developed into the GAZ-67 (92,843 to 1953) and the BA-64 armoured car. The GAZ-69 of 1953 went to the new Ulyanovsk plant from 1954; GAZ built the M-72 and GAZ-46 on its parts and then concentrated on the Volga cars and GAZ trucks. The Tigr armoured vehicle of 2005 is built by the Arzamas plant of the GAZ Group.
